Brief Historical Information:
The first church in Victoria Avenue was built in 1856 and was burned down in 1868.
A new church, with spire and large bell imported from London was ready for opening in 1868 but before dedication the following Sunday, it was burnt to the ground. Arson was suspected.
In 1870, a replacement was built of the same design (photograph attached below). The last service at this church was held in June 1913.
The congregation then moved to the brick and Oamaru stone church at 112 Guyton Street. The foundation stone of this church was laid in November 1912 and it was opened in 1913.
